Octavia Up Close Part 1/3: NSK Micro Platinum DS

Sometimes there comes a product in the yoyo world that really blows me away. Its pretty rare that this happens - because its all been done. I watched as yoyos moved from plastic to aluminum. Then came the O-ring response, and silicone response. And as manufacturing standards got higher and prices got lower - it hit a plateau. There was no better or worse anymore. There was just different. Almost every aspect had been covered - Almost.

Why Titanium

by Jeffrey Pang October 28, 2015 1 Comment

I think one of the most commonly asked question I get is why titanium is so great. And as they say - pictures are worth 1000 words. Because aluminum only takes a few minutes to machine, the shop always does aluminum proofs first before commiting to the hour long process of crafting the titanium prototypes. This way you can see the machine marks, where the tool will hit - everything without wasting expensive titanium barstock.

The Camera That Did It All

by Jeffrey Pang September 30, 2015

3 years ago, I got a Canon 550D. It was my first DSLR camera that shot video, and I was traveling around the states to shoot yoyo contests. I actually didnt even shoot any pictures with it at the time. With that camera I shot one of the most popular videos on my channel - NER2013 with around 35k views. I was using a lot of Nikon lenses before - so I had these complicated adapters that meant I could only shoot in manual. I got rid of that thing, and traded it for a Nikon body - the D5100. I traveled central Europe for 4 months with that camera - but I didn't fall in love with it like I did with the 550D.

Retail Pangs

by Jeffrey Pang September 11, 2015 1 Comment

One of my closer friends in the yoyo community is Andre Boulay. I first met him at Worlds years ago, when I was just a kid. We kept in contact after I met him again in 2013 MA States when I was all grown up. The yoyo community is strange like that. Sometimes you won't see someone for 3 or 4 years and suddenly you see them at a random contest and hit it off again. Sometimes they change completely. Especially the young ones. Its one of the top reasons why I love traveling to contests.

Evora R-SP

by Jeffrey Pang August 26, 2015 4 Comments

I am writing this to you in my grandfathers apartment located in Hong Kong. Unfortunately he isn't here today, he passed away about 7 months ago. He flew back and fourth from Canada to Hong Kong pretty frequently. He was kind enough to leave this apartment behind - a place to stay free of charge for any family members who want to visit HK. Its been a crazy up and down (no pun intended) of traveling and trying to get this new run of yoyos done. Somehow I convince myself this is actually sustainable.

Unboxing Experience

by Jeffrey Pang August 05, 2015 1 Comment

Now that most everyone has received their Evoras, heres an inside look at what made the yoyo so special. Something that is always overlooked is packaging. Many people said they didn't care about fancy packaging but it was something I did for myself. So many companies out there have lackluster packaging, but for a premium product you need to go the extra mile. So I did.

Tallest Building In Toronto

by Jeffrey Pang July 29, 2015

I have lived 30 minutes away from Toronto for 22 years. If anyone has visited before, the first thing you'd probably notice is the huge needle thing in the skyline. For whatever reason I never had any interest in it before. It was just always there. Last week I got stuck in Toronto with nothing to do. I sat in a parking lot contemplating on getting food or hit up a bar for a pint. I sat around for 30 minutes, then I looked up. Somehow it looks so much bigger when you are near the base of it. From a distance, it looks kind of small, almost like a taller skyscraper. When I was in Seattle, I went up the Space Needle. While that thing is definitely a tall structure at 184 meters, the CN tower is - wait for it - 553 meters tall. In your face Seattle.

Birth Certificate

by Jeffrey Pang July 15, 2015

This week has been a bit of a roller coaster. When talking to the print shop, it looked like custom print sizing was going to take even longer to resolve. Unfortunately the quoted date of Monday was a bit optimistic. Each day is just waiting for the final piece. Last I talked to the shop, they said it would likely get done by today. So fingers crossed. With that said, it doesn't mean there isn't work being done. I recently got the certificates done which look spectacular. Each one has been cut by hand - and only signed after testing the yoyo. This ensures a better quality control for each shipment.

Build Your Dream

by Jeffrey Pang July 08, 2015 1 Comment

Last few days has been pretty insane. I have been trying to get the packaging and shirts done with a help of a friend, Dwayne. He runs DreamFactory, a print shop located just outside of Toronto. Believe it or not, each shirt is printed by hand in house by Dwayne.

The Nostalgic Release

by Jeffrey Pang July 05, 2015 1 Comment

Years ago, there was a Yoyo store called Yoyonation. Back then, only a handful of new manufactures would release yoyos. When they did, people swarmed to get them. It was chaotic, but exciting. Yoyos like the first run Peak, the E1NS, Miroc. Bapezillas and Eetsits. They would cause so much internet traffic that servers would crash. The lucky few who were persistent (and lucky) enough to spam click refresh and crawl their way to check out with the laggy shopping cart were the victorious ones. This caused so much commotion. Who got one? Who experienced the server crash? How many minutes did it take to sell out?

An Old Friend

by Jeffrey Pang July 02, 2015

Sometimes, friends will just drop out of your life completely. Its not sad - people change. People grow. And that is never a sad thing. I think the last time I explored this little park was with my old friend - lets call her Sasha. No wait, lets call her Sandra. I like Sandra better. Anyway, Its been almost 4 years since the last time I was at this little park. Time sure does fly.

Evora - First Post

by Jeffrey Pang May 28, 2015

I am sitting here trying to make this website happen. I decided to add a blog section to inform people of progress and new stuff I am working on. Its been a lot of work to get up to this point, and I hope people genuinely like the Evora. So many sleepless nights have been spent working on this thing, and I can now see the light at the end of the tunnel.
